PC ↔ Xbox crossplay on Subnautica 2 (May 2026)
⚠️ Important update — No Subnautica 2 dedicated server: Unknown Worlds did not ship any dedicated server tool for the May 14, 2026 Early Access. Multiplayer runs only in peer-to-peer via Epic Online Services: the session is hosted on one player’s machine (4 players max). References to a “server” below actually mean the co-op session hosted by one of the players. See the community request for dedicated servers.
Good news: Subnautica 2 supports PC ↔ Xbox Series X|S crossplay from the May 14, 2026 launch. Your friends on Steam, Epic, Game Pass PC and Xbox can play together on the same server.
⚠️ Early Access tutorial: Exact multiplayer menu UI will be available May 14. This guide covers what’s officially confirmed.

📋 Step 1: Understand the 4-player cap
Subnautica 2 EA = 4 players maximum total, all platforms combined:
- 4 PC ✅
- 4 Xbox ✅
- 2 PC + 2 Xbox ✅
- 1 PC + 3 Xbox ✅
No “8 players if crossplay”. Hard cap.
⚙️ Step 2: Server-side configuration
No special crossplay config server-side. The dedicated server listens for UDP — whether from Steam, Epic or Xbox clients, it’s transparent.
Check with your host:
- ✅ Subnautica 2 template configured for crossplay (default)
- ✅ UDP port properly open
- ✅ No IP block rejecting Xbox Live
🔧 Step 3: Configure Xbox client-side
For Xbox players joining a server:
- Xbox → Settings → Account → Privacy & online safety
- Xbox privacy → View details & customize
- Communication & multiplayer tab
- You can play with people outside of Xbox:
Allow
⚠️ Child accounts: parent must allow on family.microsoft.com before child can join.
✅ Step 4: Join a server (expected procedure)
Three standard patterns (exact UI on May 14):
- Friend Code / Gamertag: host invites via multiplayer menu, Xbox player accepts in hub
- Direct IP + port: Xbox player enters server IP in menu
- Public server browser: host makes server visible, Xbox player searches list
🚨 Troubleshooting
My PS5 friend can’t join
PS5 isn’t supported before final v1.0 (no date announced, likely 2027+). No workaround.
Xbox child account blocked
Check family.microsoft.com:
- “Play with people outside Xbox” →
Allow - “Communicate outside Xbox” →
Allow
Parent must validate.
Xbox usernames appear differently
Normal behavior — each player keeps their Gamertag / Steam name. No automatic account merging.
Worse latency in crossplay?
No. Ping depends only on physical distance to server. An Xbox player in Paris on a Paris server has better ping than a PC player in Sydney.
Game Pass Core / Gold required?
Microsoft historically requires Game Pass Core for Xbox multiplayer. Exact Subnautica 2 policy TBC May 14. Game Pass Ultimate includes Core.
